Onsemi, a renowned semiconductor company, has announced the launch of its groundbreaking DC ultra-fast charging pile solution. This new offering includes nine new EliteSiC™ power integrated modules (PIMs), which are designed to provide bidirectional charging capabilities for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS).

Onsemi Unveils Groundbreaking DC Ultra-Fast Charging Solution for EVs

Based on silicon carbide technology, these solutions promise higher efficiency and simpler cooling mechanisms, significantly reducing system costs. Compared to traditional silicon-based IGBT solutions, these new modules can be up to 40% smaller in size and 52% lighter in weight. This more compact and lighter charging platform will provide designers with all the key building blocks needed for the rapid deployment of reliable, efficient, and scalable DC fast charging networks, enabling EV batteries to be charged up to 80% in just 15 minutes.

Onsemi's comprehensive PIM product portfolio is suitable for key topologies in the market. Designers also have the option to generate piecewise-linear electrical circuit simulation (PLECS) models using Onsemi's PLECS model self-generation tool and apply simulations through the Elite Power simulation tool included in the product portfolio.

Each module from Onsemi utilizes chips from the same wafer to ensure higher consistency and reliability, thus preventing performance discrepancies that may arise from using discrete devices from different suppliers.

In addition to reliability, the module product portfolio boasts several features:

  • Utilization of third-generation M3S SiC MOSFET technology, offering ultra-low switching losses and super high efficiency.
  • Support for multi-level T-type neutral point clamped (TNPC), half-bridge, and full-bridge key topologies.
  • Scalable output power stages from 25kW to 100kW, supporting various DC fast charging and energy storage system platforms, including bidirectional charging.
  • Industry-standard F1 and F2 packaging options, with the choice of pre-applied thermal interface materials (TIM) and press-fit pins.
  • Optimal thermal management to avoid system failures due to overheating.
  • Full SiC modules minimize power loss, leading to energy savings and cost reductions.
  • Increased robustness and reliability ensure continuous and coherent operation.

This innovation by Onsemi marks a significant stride in the EV and ESS market, offering a promising future for electric vehicle infrastructure and energy storage solutions. As the world moves towards more sustainable energy practices, advancements like these play a crucial role in supporting the transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems.
